As a result, the rotating outages ERCOT had asked for could not be rotated, and instead many Texans lost power for days. However in February 2021, ERCOT lost control of the grid as large amounts of power generation went offline even after ERCOT had requested outages. In extreme circumstances, the outages may become longer.ĮRCOT has resorted to asking for controlled outages only five times: once in 1989, once in 2006, once in 2011, once in 2014 ( only in the Rio Grande Valley), and once during the winter storm in February 2021. Local utility companies decide how to decrease demand and typically implement rotating outages in which different areas experience temporary interruptions. The power grid operator considers service interruptions to customers a last-resort option.ĭuring a rotating outage, ERCOT contacts local power utility companies and asks them to reduce their demand on the power grid. Rotating outages, also known as rolling blackouts, occur only in ERCOT’s most severe level of emergency conditions, what it calls EEA3. If an energy emergency is called, consumers are asked to continue conserving as much energy as possible if they’re able to safely. If ERCOT has put out an energy conservation alert, it means the operator hasn’t yet moved into EEA1 conditions, but may do so in the future. EEA3, the most critical form of energy emergency, is the only time when residential customers may begin to experience outages.Įnergy conservation requests are separate from energy emergencies. Under EEA2, the grid operator can reduce power to large industrial customers, such as manufacturing facilities, refineries and cryptocurrency miners, among others. There are three levels of energy emergencies, which the grid operator calls EEA1, EEA2 and EEA3.ĭuring EEA1, ERCOT may call on all available power supplies, such as tapping into power from other neighboring grids. Declaring an energy emergency means the grid operator will start using special resources to prevent outages. Many local utilities offer updates on their website and text alerts for outages, including:Īn energy emergency occurs when the amount of stress on the grid means that ERCOT can’t balance electricity supply and demand using normal procedures. ![]() Texans who are experiencing an outage but don’t see any announcements from ERCOT should check with their local utility company instead. The power outage alert program supplies Texas broadcasters with information and updates about outages to distribute to the public. The Texas Department of Public Safety also works with ERCOT and other grid operators in Texas to put out power outage alerts when one of the grid operators believes it doesn’t have enough power supply to meet demand for the state or a particular region. ( Learn about what causes local outages here.) When individual towns are experiencing an outage, the problem is much more likely to be local, according to an ERCOT spokesperson. Rotating outages also affect the entire ERCOT region, which covers most of Texas. This can include reports in local media, on ERCOT’s Facebook and Twitter, through the ERCOT app and through emergency email alerts that residents can sign up for here. When ERCOT calls for a rotating outage, the information will be available through several sources, a spokesperson said. They have different causes and may last for a different amount of time. ![]() But local outages and rotating outages called for by ERCOT are different. It’s easy for Texans to confuse local outages with statewide issues with the grid. However, local power outages may still be possible due to local weather. So far, the state’s grid leaders say they are monitoring the weather and expect to meet power demand. ![]() El Paso may also see a winter storm beginning Wednesday, according to forecasts.Įach severe weather crisis might bring panic of losing power, recalling the February 2021 grid failure that killed hundreds and left millions without electricity and water for days. Other parts of the state, including the Panhandle and Coastal Plains, are expected to see freezing or below-freezing temperatures. The National Weather Service has forecast freezing rain, sleet or ice on roads in much of Central, North and West Texas from Monday through Wednesday morning. ![]() What is supposed to be one of the happiest times of the year can very quickly become the worst.īut as a team, we’re here to give patients the best possible chance of survival and recovery by bringing hospital-level care to people in their ultimate moment of need-whenever and wherever that is. When tragedy strikes around Christmas, it feels particularly poignant. We’re trained to always provide patients with the best possible medical care whenever we’re called but I think we’re even more acutely aware of the consequence of our actions when we’re treating patients on Christmas Day. We’re the last guests people expect to turn up that day. We could land in the middle of a field when someone’s been taken ill on their traditional Christmas Day walk. We could end up in a family home. We could be called to someone who’s been caught in a road traffic collision on their way to visit family. ![]() No one expects that they’re going to need Magpas Air Ambulance that day. ![]() Working this Christmas is important to me. Coming back to cold food is part and parcel of the job! My team and I will still try and cook a meal in the small kitchen at the operations base, but we also need to be ready to drop everything, leaving the second the emergency phone rings–as it usually does just as we’re about to sit down. However, it’ll be very different this year. Usually I’d be spending time with my family and friends taking part in all the traditions, donning my reindeer jumper and sitting down to a big Christmas dinner. I joined Magpas Air Ambulance earlier this year, and I’ll be on shift this Christmas Day. ![]() Aside from her eight Brit Awards, she has also collected four Grammy Awards and an MTV Video Music Award. At its worst, you can at least hear where Barclay is yearning to get to-that transient place where acrimony collides into reflection then rebounds back again. Amphetamine Ballads doesn’t come bearing a fully formed vision of a band, carving out insight with switchblades right from the start. This is music cast in the after hours world inhabited by the characters of Tom DiCillo’s Johnny Suede or Jim Jarmusch’s group of Memphis drunks from Mystery Train, if not quite (yet) breathing the same air of total fatalism as Nicholas Ray’s They Live By Night. If the Amazing Snakeheads sound like a drunk stumbling around looking for the next bar at the close of this album, it’s at least an appropriate way for them to operate. The join between the different sides of the band isn't easily glued together-when they stretch out into the seven-minute “Every Guy Wants to Be Her Baby” it feels like momentum gained has suddenly been lost, especially as nothing strong enough happens to sustain its runtime. Elsewhere, the band works in a bubblegum edge on “Here It Comes Again”, mirroring the pop-garage approach of the earliest White Stripes material, while “Flatlining” hurtles toward the MC5 with Barclay at his authoritarian best as he rips shreds out of his vocal cords. “Heading for Heartbreak” works along the same lines as Gallon Drunk’s distinctly North London take on Cave’s blues, recalling their standout track “You Should Be Ashamed”. Barclay’s not the strongest writer, but he overcomes it by throwing everything of himself into the music-on “Swamp Song” he dispenses with words altogether and simply screams, David Yow-style.Ĭave’s Birthday Party era is going to be a constant comparison point for the Amazing Snakeheads, but most of the time they appear to be working through various descendents of Cave’s style. ![]() “Nighttime” is typical of the band’s vigor, with vicious slide guitar riffs overlapping pounding drums and the odd lyrical clunker (“I’m a soul sucker, I’m here to suck your soul”). Watching Barclay get there is this album’s greatest asset, setting an overall narrative to a series of songs that would otherwise be struggling for air amid the morass of greasy material by countless other bands in this vein. By the album’s close, with an actual ballad titled “Tiger By the Tail”, there’s tasteful Spanish guitar and a deep air of surrender. The first half is full of Barclay falling to the floor, lying prostrate, kicking against everything around him. There are two distinct parts to Amphetamine Ballads, the four-piece band’s debut album for indie behemoths Domino. It was rather touching to get a glimpse into his time on the moon, but ultimately this season did not do him any justice.Įqually, Viktor’s regret and focus on rectifying leaving Sissy and Harlan behind felt like a really soft serve. After falling head over heels for Sloane, he’s reduced back to the same hopeless character from Season 1, but at least he’s not alone. We don’t even see him show his abilities this season, except in the first tussle with the Sparrows. The lovable idiot trope is about as tiring as having another apocalypse to face. The heart makes the brain numbĪlthough Luther ( Tom Hopper ) and Sloane ( Genesis Rodriguez ) have a sudden entanglement after their first couple of meetings, it’s a bit infuriating seeing Luther useless yet again. All we know is their different handling gave us two outcomes, a dead Ben and Sparrow Ben (alive) who feels some guilt and may have received his demotion to Number Two in that “failure.” I doubt we get a full answer on that mission soon, but finally mentioning it was a nice nod to the comics. In a couple of mentions and a desk drawing, there is the topic of what happened to Umbrella Ben and the vagueness gives little insight into what the “Jennifer Incident” was. Right – Comic panel of Diego / “Kraken” for reference Left – Diego and Lila look at Stan’s slushee cup as he disintegrates from the Kugelblitz. Which is made worse by shifting the guilt onto Viktor about Harlan accidentally taking out the Umbrella Academy’s mothers. Having Viktor ( Elliot Page ) once again be the cause of even more destruction felt tiring. This felt like a huge distraction and the story lingered for too long. Harlan now aged-up and motherless ( Callum Keith Rennie) makes a significant reappearance and is a literal force to be reckoned with. Between a hilarious “wreck” of a training montage in mastering his powers, to his conversation with Stan where he has the greatest self-realizations, I thoroughly enjoyed the moments between Klaus and Reginald which helped him in the literal sense of overcoming ghosts in a graveyard. Robert Sheehan as Klaus continues to carry more than half of the emotions of this show single-handedly. The dismissal scene with Pogo absolutely devastated me, and the handing of pills from Pogo to Jake Epstein’s Alphonso was a second dagger to my heart. The actions of the Hargreeves in Dallas paid more than one price, Colm Feore as Sir Reginald took his encounter in the 60s with his first class as a sign to adopt different children. His attitude is also a huge departure from what audiences grew attached to in the first two seasons. ![]() For starters, he’s elevated in his position as Number Two versus his lowly Number Six. Merger enforcement also was a key focus of the Executive Order, which criticized corporate consolidation that it characterized as plaguing the U.S. The DOJ also filed Statements of Interest in two private litigations, seeking to set judicial precedents that would broadly apply the antitrust laws to labor. The DOJ also continues to examine potential anticompetitive practices in labor markets, including an increase in criminal investigations and prosecutions of no-poach agreements, wage fixing, and other alleged conspiracies in labor markets that DOJ contends are per se violations of the antitrust laws. The DOJ followed suit on July 26, 2022, signing its own Memorandum of Understanding with the NLRB.Īs we reported here, the DOJ entered into a similar arrangement with the United States Department of Labor (DOL) in March, signing a Memorandum of Understanding to memorialize a commitment to exchange information either agency uncovers that could trigger an additional investigation by the other agency. Most recently, on July 19, 2022, the FTC announced it is joining with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in a new Memorandum of Understanding that outlines ways in which the two agencies will work together to share information, conduct cross-training of agency staff, and partner on investigative efforts within each agency’s authority. Good input methods, stable app, aimed more at traditional notation, but still flexible enough for most music. No, I haven't forgotten Sibelius: great for quickly making professionally looking scores (with beautiful fonts), only little learning curve. ![]() Maybe also interesting for music teachers. It is easy to use and also has a good iPad app. ![]() It has muuuch better sounds than Finale (or any other notation app), which is great if you do orchestration. If you do composing with more traditional notation (film music, pop music, most of the classical repertoire) I'd have a look at Notion. The best, but also the WORST looking sheet music I have ever seen was made with Finale. I mean, if you just use Finale's default templates, you won't be really creating professional-looking scores (for example, the default font of Finale is Times New Roman :-) and you will still use a lot of time learning it. You can try with Finale, but probably you won't get happy with it. If you're a music teacher or student and want to write some etudes or compose something from time to time, then I'd recommend MuseScore. So, if you want to seriously get into music notation/composing and you want to invest time and money in your scores, Finale is a good choice. If you want to write avant-garde music, with advanced new notation, you nearly *have to* go with Finale – the only other app I can imagine for this is NoteAbilityPro. The web is full with plug-ins and additional fonts for Finale, so you have lots of possibilities to make your scores look personal. And yes, this app can create really beautiful professional scores – the point here is that you can really make your own, individually styled scores – nobody will see what app you have used for it. Anyway the input-methods are great, if you do composing, the speedy entry (with MIDI-keyboard) is fantastic (you can play/try your music at the keyboard and Finale will only write down when you type together the rhythmic values). The core of this app is brilliant, I love entering notes real time by MIDI-keyboard (if you're not very good at it, you can first tap the rhythm with the hyperscribe-tool and then the correct pitches with the repitch-tool), the "engine" for those things is very good. That takes time, as Finale allows for more customisation than any other app in this field, it is very versatile many give up on it during this process, but once you have "set up" the app for you and your needs, Finale shows its strengths. I think the key for using Finale well, you have to make your own templates, and find your own workflow. I use both apps (and some other, more specialised software), and both have their positive and negative points. It's the quasi industry standard, in its segment challenged only by Sibelius. ![]() Everybody who gets into music notation/composing knows Finale. ![]() ![]() Whether you're getting your first learner's permit or renewing your license, we guarantee that you'll breeze through your exam, or we'll give your money back.
